Mad About Dining Room Chairs!

In May, DH and I plan to take two weeks to completely renovate our dining room.  And, of course,  I've  already started researching dining room furniture.  What caught my attention?  Chairs! Dining room chairs are quickly becoming my new shoe obsession.

A chic dining room chair can add a splash of personality to an otherwise bland room.  No matter what your style might be, you are sure to fall head over heelslike I haveover the possibilities.

A Weekend Guest- Part One

What's more nerve wrecking than planning a wedding for 120 guests?  Having your first overnight guest in your new home that happens to be not so new.

This was our guest room before closing:

Cannot Guarantee A Splinter-free Night Sleep

When we moved in, the classy wood paneling was removed revealing 70 year old plaster with a couple coats of paintmaybe some lead based, definitely some oil based. The blue carpet was pulled up to reveal hardwood floors that the previous owners restainedclassic HGTV move. The popcorn ceiling isn’t the greatest, but it does hide the imperfections of the original plaster. This room actually doesn’t have a closet, but we plan to turn a portion of the current upstairs bathroom into a walk-in closet during the renovation.

What's the plan to making this a guest-worthy room?  Paint, a bed and side table, some amazing soft sheets, comforter, and a little TLC.

Although it takes a significant amount of time, I tape all of the edges and place plastic drop cloths over the hardwood floor to avoid spills.  I recommend investing in cloth drop cloths if you can afford it.  They are definitely worth the investment and can be reused.

Benjamin Moore's Moonshine immediately caught my eye when we first researched paint colors for our home.  I was in love and painted it all over our hallway.  Unfortunately, Moonshine was too light of a color to compliment our current color scheme.   It was like falling in love with that dress on the store's mannequin, but discovering it really isn't your style once you get it home.   When it came to choosing a color for the guest room, using the leftover Moonshine made financial sense, plus it doesn’t hurt that I LOVE the color!!!

I was able to paint two coatspainting plaster really sucks because the plaster sucks up a lot of paint in about two hours.  The best part is peeling off all of the painters tape, standing back, and admiring your handy work.   TIP:  Remove the painter's tape before the paint is dry to avoid peeling!

Weekend Bargains on Craigslist

My friend Nicole sold me on buying used and refurbished furniture!  Savvy shoppers have lots of reasons to purchase secondhand— going Green,  saving a few bucks, buying vintage.  For me, it’s less about saving the earth (sorry Jaime!) and more about the high of getting a great piece of furniture without paying retail.  It’s about being able to purchase items I would have otherwise not been able to.

So where do I look for brand name furniture pieces?  Craigslist.   You’ll need to invest a bit of time surfing the web, and depending on where you live, you might have to expand your area search.

Look what I found for sale today!

  1. Pottery Barn Bailey Console Table, Retail $850, Craigslist $500
  2. Ethan Allen Crackled Ball Table Lamp, Retail Price  $339 Craigslist Price: $100
  3. Pottery Barn Chesapeake Outdoor Furniture Set, Retail $3000, Craigslist Price $1250 (STEAL!)
  4.  Pottery Barn Studio Wall Shelves, Retail $299, Craigslist $99
  5. Pottery Barn Bedford Rectangular Desk Set Retail $750, Craigslist $300
  6. Ethan Allen Hall Tree in Antique White, Retail Price: $1389, Craigslist Price $800
Have a moment this Sunday morning?  Check out your local Craigslist furniture listings for your favorite furniture brands!  You just might find that coffee table you’ve been pinning over.

From Shabby Chic to Black

I've accepted the fact that I have expensive taste.  I don't know what it is, but I tend to gravitate towards expensive things.  Unfortunately my taste doesn't always match what's in my our bank account.

What caught my eye:
$729 Price Tag
You have to know when to pick your battles with DH and I knew trying to convince DH to spend that kind of cash on an end table would have been a waste of time.  I had to get a little creative, which for me usually means bringing out the paint brush.

During a recent shopping trip to our favorite antique store, I scored The Knock-Off!

$300 Price Tag

Already stripped, sanded, and in great condition, this piece was a great buy!

What's the trick to getting paint to stick to your furniture?  Oil-based primer!  Why use a primer?  First, your paint isn't going to peel off.  If you spill a beverage on it, it won't seep into the wood and stain.  The primer comes in white, so I asked the home improvement clerk to tint it gray since I'm painting the table black.

The trick to preventing paint from peeling and flaking

You're probably horrified at the site of me painting over hardwood floor but it was cold outside!  And you haven't been in my haunted basement!

Step 1: Apply a thin even coat of primer. It's important to let the paint dry completely before applying more paintmake sure you thoroughly read the instructions before applying your second coat!

Make sure to have a window open!
Step 2: Apply latex-based paint.  With a new clean brush, apply a thin coat and don't worry about the lines!  When you use a good paint brush and paint, lines are minimal and good paint self corrects.  For this piece I used Glidden's Semi-Gloss (for a bit of shine) Onyx Black.  Don't worry about applying latex-based paint over oil-based paint, it's the other way around that often leads to the bubbling and DIY disaster!  Remember, latex after oil!

Invest in quality paint and brushes
Remember, read the paint directions carefully and apply the second coat after the recommended drying time.
Almost done!
Step 3: I always recommend sealing your projects for easy cleaning, the prevention of scuffs and scratches and to prevent liquids from penetrating your furniture.  For this table, I used MinWax's water-based polycrylic protective finish in clear satin.  The clear satin finish avoids adding an extra layer of shine to the already semi-gloss black paint.  Use a clean paint brush and remember NOT to go over an area you have already brushed the sealer on.  This finish brushes on creamy white and harden's clear so you know exactly where you've applied it!

For easy cleaning!

Step 4: After applying your final coat of sealer, wait at least 3 full days (72 hrs) before placing anything on top

$729 Worthy for only $341

Dollars & Cents:

End Table: $300
Oil-based primer: $8
Paint: $12
Paint Brushes: $21
Project time: 1 day/ 3 days for drying

Weekend at Lucketts

I know it's just a football game, but I can't help but be a nervous wreck waiting for the Patriots and Giants to play tonight.  Four years ago I was in a bar in Georgia crying my eyes out because I couldn't believe Peyton's little brother beat my Tommy Brady.

So what's my strategy this year so that I don't freak out all day waiting for the game?  A day of treasure hunting at Lucketts!

What did we walk away with?

Rock Solid Coasters  $5

Small Gold and Bronze Mirrors $10

You know I couldn't walk away without buying something I can spray paint!  Most wine racks take up valuable counter top real estate.  This $25 rack holds 5 bottles and is waist high.

Can't wait to spray paint it!!!  Maybe red?

We also found some really unique lamps and shades that  would work well in our guest bedroom.

How do you keep calm before the big game?

Online Love Affair

Google is amazing!  I was cleaning my inbox when I came across these emails from a year ago!!  Buying a house a month before our wedding was never our plan, but DH and I couldn't help ourselves from looking at what was available online.  Being abroad and sometimes bored, I had plenty of time to search listings.  I must have sent DH over a dozen of "you must look at this house now" emails, but, as the post title suggests, sometimes it is love at first sight.

Emails unedited, please pardon our grammar/punctuation!

Inspiration Board- Living Room

I haven't shared it yet, but this past summer DH and I, with the help of mom and dad, renovated our living room.  We added crown molding and replaced the old window, door, and floor moldings and we also refurbished the bookshelves and fireplace.

Of course, a renovated room can only mean one thing—it's time to go shopping!  But!  I don't want to make the same mistake I made with our kitchen's paint color—you'll soon find out exactly how many times I painted our kitchen.  Despite not being the most patient person, I'm taking time to select furniture, and I've put together an inspiration board!

1- Becca, an Ethan Allen (EA) designer, and I worked together to come up with this floor plan.  Sometimes all you need is an outside perspective to force you out of your comfort zone and show you what else can be done with your space.

2- Ethan Allen Chair-  Once I sat on this chair I didn't want to get up!  It's oh so comfy!  We're upholstering this vintage chair with a contemporary fabric design (3) to fit both DH's—classical—and my style—modern.

4- Inspiration- This table from EA is priced over what I would pay for an end table; however, I do love it and will use it as inspiration when rummaging through Lucketts.

5-  I need a glass, or see through, lamp to sit on top of table 4 so that we don't lose the natural sunlight coming in through the window that the table will sit in front of.   I like this lamp from Pottery Barn, but I'm not sure if I'm in love with it.

6- It seems counterintuitive to cover 71-year-old hardwood floors with a huge rug, but I think a rug here is the piece that ties the room together.

7- Inspiration- Another lovely table, but overpriced.  I'm sure I can find something similar to it!

8- Ethan Allen Chair- I swear, EA does a great job of making chairs and sofas you simply do not want to get up from.  This chair, upholster in a cat friendly off-white fabric, will work great next to the renovated bookshelves.

9- Already owned!  1 of 3 pieces—the Tiffany's floor lamp and flat screen tv— we decided to keep from our original post-college furniture.  I love the statement this oversize piece makes.

10- Inspiration- I need to find an oval table to place on the right side of the sofa

11- Wall Color- Hands down Benjamin Moore makes the best blues ever!  Whether you color match it at your local hardware store or you buy it at BM, you can't go wrong with Santa Monica Blue.

What's on your inspiration board?
